John Grisham Cries For All The 60-Something White Men In Prison For Looking At Child Porn [UPDATED]

“We have prisons now filled with guys my age. Sixty-year-old white men in prison who’ve never harmed anybody, would never touch a child. But they got online one night and started surfing around, probably had too much to drink or whatever, and pushed the wrong buttons, went too far and got into child porn.”

Writer John Grisham is fighting the good fight, defending hapless, white, middle-aged drunks who totally accidentally they swear downloaded child porn and found themselves locked up in the clink in an interview with the Telegraph. The issue is a personal one for Grisham, who has a friend who fell victim to the justice system’s crackdown on innocent men jerking it to kiddie porn:

“His drinking was out of control, and he went to a website. It was labelled ‘sixteen year old wannabee hookers’ or something like that. And it said ‘16-year-old girls’. So he went there. Downloaded some stuff – it was 16 year old girls who looked 30.

He shouldn’t ’a done it. It was stupid, but it wasn’t 10-year-old boys. He didn’t touch anything. And God, a week later there was a knock on the door: ‘FBI!’ and it was sting set up by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to catch people – sex offenders – and he went to prison for three years.”

Got that? It was just teenage girls looking like totally legal sluts, okay? I mean, can you really blame the guy? Boys will be boys! Speaking of boys, it’s not like this friend of Grisham’s was an actual pervert, looking at little boy porn. Now that would be an issue. Lock those guys up, not the sad old white men with too much whiskey and self-loathing in their bellies who just want a little innocent fun looking at 16-year-old hookers, you know?

Listen, in all seriousness, it’s as if John Grisham has forgotten that there are real kids, real 16-year-old girls, on the other side of those kiddie porn downloads. Are there too many people in our prison system? Fuck yes. But forgive me if I don’t cry tears for all the white men who’ve found themselves arrested for looking at teen porn, as if this is seriously the prison justice movement of our time. [Telegraph UK]

UPDATE: Grisham has posted an apology to his website, writing:

Anyone who harms a child for profit or pleasure, or who in any way participates in child pornography—online or otherwise—should be punished to the fullest extent of the law.

My comments made two days ago during an interview with the British newspaper The Telegraph were in no way intended to show sympathy for those convicted of sex crimes, especially the sexual molestation of children. I can think of nothing more despicable.

I regret having made these comments, and apologize to all.
