Actress Daniele Watts Detained By LAPD After Being Mistaken For A Prostitute

Well, this is all sorts of fucked up. “Django Unchained” actress Daniele Watts, who is Black, claims she was “handcuffed and detained” by Los Angeles police last week, after she was approached and asked to show ID because she was kissing her husband, who is white, in public. Watts posted the following on her Facebook page:

Today I was handcuffed and detained by 2 police officers from the Studio City Police Department after refusing to agree that I had done something wrong by showing affection, fully clothed, in a public place.

When the officer arrived, I was standing on the sidewalk by a tree. I was talking to my father on my cell phone. I knew that I had done nothing wrong, that I wasn’t harming anyone, so I walked away.

A few minutes later, I was still talking to my dad when 2 different police officers accosted me and forced me into handcuffs.

She also posted photos, which show her crying and in cuffs. Her husband, Brian James Williams, a chef, supported her story in a post on his own Facebook page, writing, “From the questions that he asked me as D was already on her phone with her dad, I could tell that whoever called on us (including the officers), saw a tatted RAWKer white boy and a hot bootie shorted black girl and thought we were a HO (prostitute) & a TRICK (client).” He also posted a photo of Watts’ cut wrist, the alleged result of rough handling by the officers.

They handcuffed her and threw her roughly into the back of the cop car until they could figure out who she was. In the process of handcuffing her, they cut her wrist, which was truly NOT COOL!!!

PDA isn’t a crime and it certainly isn’t evidence of illegal sexual activity. You certainly have to wonder, as Watts and Williams clearly do, if the couple was targeted because of their interracial relationship, and that the police leaped to the ridiculous conclusion that she was a sex worker and he was a john because she is Black and he is white. Regardless, I certainly hope the LAPD investigates the incident and disciplines the officers involved.
