Oscar Pistorius Acquitted Of Premeditated Murder

  • Today, South African paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was acquitted of premediated murder for killing his girlfriend, Reeva Steenkamp, on Valentine’s Day last year. The judge said it could not be proved that Pistorius intended to kill Steenkamp; he has maintained that he accidentally shot her because thought intruders were in his home. Pistorius was found not guilty of both premeditated murder, which carried a sentence of 25 years, and homicide charges. He still faces charges for culpable homicide, which is similar to manslaughter charges in the U.S. [New York Times, NPR]
