Weekend Shut-In Worksheet: Read The Latest Haruki Murakami, Watch “Love Is Strange” & Make Risotto

Activities are wonderful, but sometimes, it’s fine to want to shut the world out for a couple of days, and make some serious time for you. Don’t be afraid of FOMO, either. There will always be another party, another pub crawl, another picnic. The time you’ll spend indulging in the things you want to do, alone, are well worth it. Here’s a handy list of awesome things to do this weekend!

  • “The Former Gang Girl Who Wants To Run Las Vegas” (ELLE): Writer Rebecca Traitster is one of the most whip-smart reporters out there, so I can’t wait to read her profile of Lucy Flores for ELLE magazine. Flores is a pro-choice, feminist Latina former gang member who served time in prison and is running for lieutenant governor of Nevada. – Jessica
  • “The Strange and Curious Tale Of The Last True Hermit” (GQ): I am endlessly fascinated by this story of a dude who lived in the Maine woods by himself for almost 30 years and sparked a local urban legend. It boggles the mind that someone could actually live that way for so long – and that he had endless time to read as many books as he wanted! I’ve only read bits of this GQ piece about him so far, and this weekend I plan to read the whole thing and learn a little more about what compels someone to ditch civilization for life in the woods. – Claire
  • Colorless Tsukuru Tazaki and His Years of Pilgrimage by Haruki Murakami: I’ve never read any Murakami, which I realize most serious readers would consider a sin, but I’m planning on coming into the light and picking up his latest novel. Our girl Ami highly recommended it and I trust her taste. – Amelia

  • “Party Down” (Hulu): Oh, if only it would rain this weekend so I could stay indoors and binge-watch “Party Down” on Hulu. – Jessica
  • “Let’s Be Cops” (in theaters): I need to laugh my ass off this weekend, so I am going to see “Let’s Be Cops” because I love Jake Johnson and Damon Wayans Jr. on “New Girl” and have heard nothing but amazing things about the movie. Go see it! – Katie
  • “Love Is Strange” (in theaters): I’m hoping to catch “Love Is Strange,” a movie about a gay couple (played by John Lithgow and Alfred Molina) whose marriage after several decades as partners costs Molina’s character his job at a Catholic school. The two are forced to sell their NYC apartment and live separately with friends while navigating the ruthless real estate market, which strains their lives in ways they never imagined. This sounds all kinds of interesting and I can’t wait to see it! – Claire

  • Ariana Grande, My Everything: Ariana Grande is a 21-year-old freak of nature with the perfect voice, and her new album, My Everything, is nothing short of amazing. [Her brother, Frankie Grande, is still the worst person to ever play “Big Brother.” — Amelia] – Katie

  • Owney’s Rum: After we had a tasting in the office this week, my hubs bought me a bottle of Owney’s rum, a white rum distilled by the world’s only all-women distillery. (Wooo!) I tried a tasty basil lemonade and I can’t wait to try some rum-based cocktails over the long weekend. – Jessica
  • Nourish: The Fit Woman’s Cookbook by Lorna Jane Clarkson: I was just introduced to this cookbook, which is full of delicious and healthy recipes. Most of all, I’m dying to try her elixir recipes. She includes concoctions for energy, glow, balance, and the one I plan on making– detox! – Katie
  • DIY Wine Cork Monogram: I drink a lot, so this wine cork monogram seems like the perfect project for me. Now I just need to drink 87 more bottles of wine and I’ll have my masterpiece. – Katie
  • Risotto: I’ve never really tried making risotto from scratch, mostly because it requires so much stirring, but my arms could use a little toning up and this recipe for roasted corn and poblano risotto sounds like an amazing Mexican twist on an Italian classic. – Amelia

  • Luxury Houses On Pinterest: Sometimes I like to look at all the fancy-ass floor plans on Pinterest’s “Luxury Houses” board and fantasize at how I’d decorate each room. Rich people need a lot of walk-in closets, I can tell you that much. – Jessica
  • Secret Garden Tour: I want to get some quality time outdoors this weekend, so I’m thinking about stopping by one of the “secret” community gardens on this list. Make a game of seeking out the community gardens in your area this weekend and exploring them while summer is still here! – Claire
