Domestic Violence Victims Could Qualify For Asylum

  • A ruling by the Justice Department’s Board of Immigration Appeals has found that a woman who fled her abusive husband in Guatemala met one of the criteria for asylum, which is that she belongs to a particular social group (in this case, I think, women who are domestic violence victims). The woman fled her country in 2005 after police refused to help her. An immigration lawyer will now rule on her case; doing so could mean other victims of DV could seek asylum as immigrants.
