Beauty Test Drive: Makeup Academy Luminizing Lip Gloss In Crimson & Anti-Feathering Lip Liner In Red

I may have a love/hate relationship with Taylor Swift, but if there’s one thing we have in common, it’s loving a bright red lip. So, when I heard that a new premium beauty line (with over 100 lip products!) became available exclusively at CVS/pharmacy, I went on the hunt for an affordable and kickass red gloss. Like the answer to my cosmetic prayers, I found Makeup Academy’s Luminizing Lip Gloss in Crimson and Anti-Feathering Lip Liner in Red, and decided to give them a good, old-fashioned Beauty Test Drive.

MUA Luminizing Lip Gloss in Crimson: $8, CVS
MUA Anti-Feathering Lip Liner in Red: $8, CVS

Application: Having previously dealt with some deep-staining lip products that left no room for less-than-perfect application, lip liner was a must before getting to my gloss— especially with fire truck red. Even though the names of the gloss and liner didn’t match, their hues looked close enough alike, so I tried on the MUA Anti-Feathering Lip Liner in Red (#405). The liner was easy to apply and made sleek, precise lines. (It’s actually also a “plumping” liner, but I didn’t notice much of that happening.)

Next up, MUA Luminizing Lip Gloss In Crimson (#100). The first thing I noticed is that the applicator is a flock tip (think felt tip, but slightly bent and structured). I love this in a gloss because it allows you to be more precise with where you’re applying the color, and totally helps when it comes time to apply to the cupid’s bow. The gloss went on ultra creamy and smooth, but I was definitely glad I used the liner, as the gloss definitely has some lip stain qualities—I could tell it wasn’t going anywhere. After applied, I felt a very slight tingling sensation from the gloss and then saw that it contains natural peppermint oil for a cooling effect. Me likey.

Results: Four hours later, I still have bright red lips. I’ve drank coffee, eaten greek yogurt and have been running my mouth all morning (per usual) and I’m pleasantly surprised with how much color has held in my pout. While pretty much all of the high-gloss shine is gone, the liner hasn’t feathered and the gloss has faded evenly, leaving me with that TSwift look I love. I’m a fan.
