Weekend Shut-In Worksheet: Watch “Outlander” And “The Knick,” Listen To Wiz Khalifa & Drink A Coconut Cocktail

Activities are wonderful, but sometimes, it’s fine to want to shut the world out for a couple of days, and make some serious time for you. Don’t be afraid of FOMO, either. There will always be another party, another pub crawl, another picnic. The time you’ll spend indulging in the things you want to do, alone, are well worth it. Here’s a handy list of awesome things to do this weekend!

  • Sisterland by Curtis Sittenfeld: The premise of Curtis Sittenfeld’s latest novel, Sisterland, never interested me much. Twin sisters who are psychics? Who cares. But I gave it a shot and trust me, it’s SO GOOD. Anyone who has sisters in real life will be able to relate to Kate and Violet’s loving, yet ceaselessly complicated, relationship. (Frisky writer Megan Reynolds is also a big fan.) – Jessica
  • “Justice Ginsburg Skeptical of Two-Year Law School Idea” (National Law Journal): I’m kinda a dork, so I’m gonna be reading this big National Law Journal interview with Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsberg, AKA Notorious RBG. – Jessica
  • “The Untold Story Of The People ‘Flashdance’ Left Behind” (Buzzfeed): I love me some cheesy 80s movies and “Flashdance” is by far one of my favorites, so I’m really interested in this article about the people behind the film’s success who went without credit all these years. When I was younger this movie seemed so magical (corny, I know), so it’s pretty sobering to see the reality behind it. – Claire
  • “Unschooling: The Case For Setting Your Kids Into The Wild” (Outside): I’m fascinated by this story about parents who adhere to “outdoor schooling,” which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like. Imagine spending your high school years camping in the woods! This is the first fall in my life that I won’t be heading back to classes, and articles like this one are getting me my back-to-school fix with some outdoor inspiration mixed in. – Claire
  • Savvy Girl: A Guide To Wine by Brittany Deal: This is the perfect, quick read for anyone who wants to learn the basics of wine. Author Brittany Deal really breaks it down in a “Wine For Dummies” kind of way that everyone can understand (and there are even pictures!) – Katie

  • Wiz Khalifa, Blacc Hollywood: This rap album, featuring the single “We Dem Boyz” is basically my favorite album of the last few months. I love Wiz’s laid back, stoney rapping style. Also, he and wife Amber Rose are just the cutest. – Amelia

  • “Outlander” (STARZ): It might be time to see what all the fuss over “Outlander” is about. It airs on Saturday nights on Starz. (Also, it’s based on a time-traveling romance novel that everyone’s mom apparently read back in the early ’90s.) – Jessica
  • “The Knick” (Cinemax): Let’s see, a TV series directed by Steven Soderberg, starring Clive Owen, about surgeons in the 1900s? YES PLEASE. I love a man with a scalpel. – Amelia

  • Upgrade Your Bathroom: My bathroom is, like, 99 percent covered in pieces of my long brown hair, so it’s due for a spruce-up. These eight bathroom upgrades look manageable and pretty. – Jessica
  • Coconut Cocktails: Thanks to a tiki party I went to after work this week, I have two plastic coconuts that are just begging for tasty cocktails made from real coconuts. Frozen coconut banana daiquris maybe? Or perhaps a Luau Coconut? – Jessica
  • Blackberry Shrub Lemonade: This weekend I am attending a BBQ by the pool. My contribution, some blackberry shrub spiked lemonade. – Sophie
  • Pumpkin Cheesecake Snickerdoodles: I know it’s not technically fall yet, but I’ve got the pumpkin bug. I’ll be making these Pumpkin Cheesecake Snickerdoodles that look TO DIE FOR. – Kate

  • Ferguson Photojournalism: Photojournalist Amy K. Nelson did fantastic reporting from Ferguson all week — check out her work at ANIMALNY. – Amelia
