Lesbian City Council Member Gets Harassed By Her Constituents

  • “I’m going to keep coming up here and tell you how gays have no morality. … You’re filth. You’re dirt. Because I have the constitutional right to say it.” That’s a man speaking to Jovanka Beckles, the vice mayor of the Richmond City Council in California’s Bay Area. She’s the city’s first openly lesbian councilwoman and damn, does she put up with some shit. A fellow councilman (who also says that Beckles is not really Black) said none of the weekly harassment is meant to be homophobic, but that she “takes [the harassment] in a homophobic way.” It’s really her own fault, you see.
