J.K. Rowling Writes A Letter As Dumbledore To Sole Survivor Of Family Mass Shooting

As if we didn’t already love J.K. Rowling enough, the Harry Potter author has gone and reminded us why we adore her so.

Following a mass shooting in Texas last month, where Ronald Lee Haskell tied up seven members of the Stay family, placing them facedown and shooting them each in the head execution style, the family’s sole survivor, 15-year-old Cassidy Stay, has been in good spirits despite losing her four siblings and both parents.

Only three days after the murders, Cassidy, who managed to survive a gun shot wound to the head, addressed a crowd in Houston, quoting Harry Potter character Albus Dumbledore in her speech. She read:

“Happiness can be found even in the darkest of times, if one remembers to turn on the light.”

But Cassidy didn’t know that her speech, combined with her love for Harry Potter, would spark such a social media frenzy. Supporters who were following Cassidy’s story immediately launched a Facebook campaign called “We Want J.K. Rowling to Meet Cassidy Stay.” The campaign caught the famous author’s eye, and while J.K. didn’t meet Cassidy in person, she did pen a heartfelt letter to the teen, handwritten in the voice of Dumbledore. On top of that, Cassidy received a wand, an acceptance letter to Hogwarts with a school supply list, and an autographed copy of the third book from the series. In addition, an internet fundraising campaign for Cassidy has also raised over $390,000.

I see this as just another reminder that people, even ones without magic powers, can be good. Hopefully this will help Cassidy remember to turn on that light. [Buzzfeed]
