Weekend Shut-In Worksheet: Read Graduates In Wonderland, Watch “They Came Together” & Bake The Best Cookies Ever (Yes, Ever)

Activities are wonderful, but sometimes, it’s fine to want to shut the world out for a couple of days, and make some serious time for you. Don’t be afraid of FOMO, either. There will always be another party, another pub crawl, another picnic. The time you’ll spend indulging in the things you want to do, alone, are well worth it. Here’s a handy list of awesome things to do this weekend!BOOKS/ARTICLES

  • “Orange is the New Black” Recaps (Washington City Paper): I’m already done bingewatching season two of “Orange Is The New Black,” but thanks to my friend Janet, I can draw it out a little longer reading show recaps written by an ex-con. A business owner named Susan who served four years for drug-related robbery charges is recapping episodes for the Washington City Paper and Janet says they’re quite good. I know what I’ll be binge-reading this weekend. – Jessica
  • The Woman Upstairs by Claire Messud: I am a book club slut and I’ve joined a new book club focused on books about unlikeable women. The first one we are reading is the novel The Woman Upstairs by Claire Messud. It’s about an artist who feels like a failure because she has to have a day job as an elementary school teacher. Then she develops this crazy, unhealthy crush on one of her student’s mothers, who is a famous and accomplished artist. It’s like one of those girl crushes you have where it’s not so much that you love the person objectively as you’re obsessively jealous and want to wear them like a skin suit. We’ve all been there, right? RIGHT?! – Jessica
  • Graduates In Wonderland by Jessica Pan and Rachel Kapelke-Dale: I’m obsessed with this book, a collection of emails between two friends in the years right after graduating from college, and from the very first page it was so relatable that I felt like they were taking words right out of my own head. I can’t put it down. – Claire
  • “Prince Fielder’s Naked ESPN Cover Is Sexy As Hell” (Deadspin): I don’t follow baseball anymore, but I absolutely loved this piece on Deadspin about the hullabaloo surrounding Prince Fielder’s naked ESPN Magazine cover and how his body is sexy as hell. Completely agree! – Amelia
  • Astrology Zone July Horoscopes: Susan Miller is a genius. She’s been sick lately — get well soon, Susan! — but finally was able to post her July horoscopes this week and mine (Scorpio) was so on point I almost cried. Read yours if your an astrology nerd. – Amelia

MUSIC/PODCASTS

  • Bookworm Podcast (KCRW): Ever listened to the Bookworm podcast? It’s epic. The host knows the books better than the authors, so their conversations are really insightful. – Rebecca
  • The Best of Neil Young: We’ve reached the point in the summer where I start listening to Neil Young all day and contemplate getting a Heart of Gold tattoo on my neck. Join me! – Amelia

TV SHOWS/MOVIES

  • “The Mindy Project” (Hulu): I’m bummed that Mindy Kaling lost out on an Emmy nomination, so in solidarity, I’ll be rewatching this last season of “The Mindy Project” while I swoon over Danny Castellano. – Claire
  • “Akira Kurosawa’s Dreams” (iTunes): Super esoteric and beautiful, and since it’s a series of short narratives you can pause it and pick it up again later. – Rebecca
  • “Shameless” (Showtime): Okay, okay, after being told by, like, everyone, including a few Frisky readers, that I NEED to watch “Shameless,” I’m finally going to start the bingewatching this weekend. I expect good things! – Amelia
  • “Life Itself” (In Theaters/OnDemand): This documentary about the late great film critic and writer, Roger Ebert, and directed by Martin Scorcese, looks moving and inspiring. – Amelia
  • “They Came Together” (In Theaters/OnDemand): Oooh dang, that awesome-looking Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd movie, which pokes fun a romcoms, is out this weekend! – Amelia

DIY/RECIPES

  • PopRocks: I bought some Pop Rocks for my niece, because eight-year-olds love Pop Rocks, right? Maybe it could be fun to try a Firecracker Float (basically, an ice cream float with Pop Rocks). (And then do some Pop Rocks shots with the leftovers.) – Jessica
  • Cold Brew Coffee: Cold brew coffee is one of my favorite things in the world and I’m pretty sure it’s super easy to make, but I never do it. I’m trying to get myself into the habit, starting this weekend. – Claire
  • Bacon-Wrapped Mediterranean-Stuffed Grilled Chicken: I’ve started compiling recipes that I want to make when I finish my nutritional cleanse (20 days to go!), and I’m drooling over this chicken recipe. – Katie
  • Bacon Parmesan Crackers: I’m going to my cousin’s birthday party this weekend, and these crackers have been requested. They seem easy, cheap and so bad for you, but sooooo good! – Katie
  • Mustache Manicure: I think this mustache mani is so cute, so I’m going to attempt to do it myself (but if I fail miserably, I’m having a professional do it, because how adorable are these mini-staches?!) – Katie
  • Nutella-Stuffed Sea-Salted Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies: These cookies, from Ambitious Kitchen, are the best cookies in the entire universe. – Rebecca
