DoubleTree Hotel In Detroit No Longer Hosting “Men’s Rights Activists” Conference
A conference for “men’s rights activists” will no longer be held at the Hilton Doubletree hotel in Detroit, Michigan, June 26 – 28 due to a sudden and unexplained change of venues.
The manager of the DoubleTree confirmed to the blog Motor City Muckraker that the MRA conference would no longer be held there. As of right now, it’s unclear whether it was a Change.org petition not to support a hate group that persuaded the Doubletree, or the widespread information about MRA misogynists following Elliot Rodger’s murder spree in Isla Vista, California.
The conference is being hosted by the blog A Voice For Men, a blog that equates feminism with misandry (the hatred of men) and features a litany of aggrieved posts about how women lie about rape and that men and boys are physically and sexually abused as much as women and girls. Other MRAs do things like complain about self-defense classes for women and post information online about ladies they believe to be “false rape accusers.” The Southern Poverty Law Center produced intelligence reports on various MRA websites and their false claims back in 2012.
The very official-sounding “International Conference On Men’s Issues” will now be held at a VFW hall in Saint Clair Shoes, Michigan. A Voice For Men portrayed the move to the new venue as their own decision:
The disingenuous and quite insane backlash against the International Conference on Men’s Issues has produced some interesting results. First, the onslaught of yellow journalism from places like Daily Kos and the Huffington Post has been unprecedented, even for those two myth-factories. The other thing it has produced is a hell of a lot more interest in the conference, and more ticket sales. So much so, as a matter of fact, that we have opted to move to a venue that will seat more people and provide more security than was available previously.
We’ll have to wait and see how many of those attendees are actual men and women interested in “men’s rights” issues and how many are journalists who are just attending to see what kooky things the MRAs will say to make a good story.
