It’s been six long years since we’ve heard any solo tunes from Jenny Lewis, and every day without her mellifluous voice has been harder than the one before it. However, at long last, it looks like the musical drought is over! This week, the ex-Rilo Kiley frontwoman released the lyric video for “Just One Of The Guys,” the first single off her long-awaited third album, The Voyager, out July 29. [Does cabbage patch dance here.]
Directed by Lior Molcho, the clip features a photo carrousel of Jenny in various poses, sporting a pair of white cat-eye sunglasses while wearing a white suit with a rainbow airbrushed on the top half of the jacket. Visually, the lyric video is an extension of the album’s cover art, which features Lewis wearing the same ensemble, and was shot by famed photographer Autumn de Wilde.
An official video is sure to follow but, in the meantime, this one allows fans to take a closer look into some of the themes Jenny might be exploring on “The Voyager,” like the perils of self criticism, our internal struggle not to judge others, and the pre-wired desire to settle down and have kids.
No matter how hard I try to be just one of the guys
There’s a little something inside that won’t let me.
No matter how hard I try to have an open mind
There’s a little clock inside that keeps ticking
There’s only one difference between you and me
When I look at myself, all I can see
I’m just another lady without a baby
Wonder how boyfriend and fellow musician Jonathan Rice feels about all that.
