19-Year-Old Girl Committed Suicide After Being Cyberbullied Over Amateur Porn

When Alyssa Funke of Minnesota was 18, she filmed an amateur porn for a site called CastingCouch-X, which features “Fresh New Amateur Girl Porn Videos.”

In March, the porno was posted online. At some point thereafter, says her family, former classmates at Stillwater Area High School began harassing Alyssa over social media, calling her a “porn star” and slang words for “slut.”

On April 16, Funke shot and killed herself.

Of course, it’s difficult to delineate exactly why this particular young woman killed herself, as the Daily Dot points out. Alyssa reportedly suffered from depression; a shitty, victim-blaming piece for My Fox Twin Cities pointed out that both of her parents had criminal records. Alyssa had also been away from her parents and nine siblings while attending her freshman year at the University of Wisconsin River Falls, which is a difficult adjustment for anyone. Her still-visible Facebook page and Twitter profile — like those of any 19-year-old girl — makes lots of references to exes, “toxic pple” and “loving someone who is damaged.”

But the cyberbullying that Alyssa suffered from her classmates over the porn certainly couldn’t have helped.

Help me understand why people are so cruel to sex workers? Don’t they understand that real people appear in the porn they watch, people who have families and pets and grocery lists just like them? Has every single classmate who wrote about Alyssa’s XXX debut on social media never looked at porn before?! Whatever the reasons that Alyssa Funke killed herself at just 19 years of age, it’s shameful that she died knowing her former classmates thought she was a slut.
