All Hail The Alt-Rock Queen: Garbage Singer Shirley Manson Is Still A Girl-Power Goddess
For those of you who celebrated Record Store Day last month, I hope you picked up a copy of Garbage’s limited-edition 10-inch green vinyl, which featured the anti-mean girls anthem “Girls Talk.” Inspiration for the song first came in 2007 when the band was putting together their greatest hits collection, Absolute Garbage, but didn’t fully take shape for another seven years—or at least until Brody Dalle (The Distillers/Spinnerette) was able to contribute her signature sneer to it.
Originally, the song was “Girls Talk Shit,” which makes complete sense when you hear Manson and Dalle spit lyrics like this:
Girls talk shit when you’re backed up against it
Don’t believe any word that they hear
And you can do what it is that you want
Without some little bitch in your ear
And girls talk shit, making no bones about it
When you’re something that they don’t understand.
Shot by producer Butch Vig (Nirvana, Against Me!) and directed by Sophie Muller (Rihanna’s “Stay,” Lana Del Rey’s “Young And Beautiful”), the black-and-white video is raw and simple, just like the song’s message: Dare to be different and don’t doubt yourself in the face of ignorant bitches. (I’m paraphrasing, of course.)
My favorite part—besides the lines: “Stop those voices in your head / They eat away your will / You’ve everything you need”—is right before the two-minute mark when Shirley leans over and gives Brody a peck on the cheek after the punk-rock goddess momentarily forgets her part. Now that’s fucking friendship.
Watch the video and check out Brody’s new album, “Diploid Love,” which also features a reciprocated guest appearance from the lovely Shirley on “Meet The Foetus/Oh Joy.”
