“Heathers” Is Now An Off-Broadway Musical
The oh-so-beloved 1980s movie “Heathers” is now a musical. I’ll wait for a moment while you squeal with glee (at least, that’s how I’d react if I were you). Rumors that “Heathers” would be headed to the stage, along with several incarnations of the production, have made the rounds these past few years. The show is finally playing off-Broadway at New World Stages in Manhattan and a cast recording is set to release in June. Playbill has shared some rehearsal footage to give us a better idea of what to expect.
If you’ll remember, “Heathers” is the story of the most popular girls in their Ohio high school: Heather Chandler, Heather Duke and Heather McNamara. When new girl Veronica Sawyer enters the scene and meets the girls’ oh-so-adorable crush, J.D., drama (and maybe a teensy bit of murder) ensues.
I haven’t seen the musical yet, but the creators of favorites like “Legally Blonde the Musical,” “Desperate Housewives” and “She’s The Man” are behind the production, so I guess it’s no surprise that it’s been described as “truthful and uplifting” with a “moving love story.” That’s not exactly how I remember the movie, but we’ll go with it. It’s no secret that I’m obsessed with “Legally Blonde,” so I’m bound to love anything with music by the same composer. Besides, what really matters here are the mass quantities of awesome plaid and shoulder pads we’ll probably get to see on stage. And the scrunchies. Nothing is more important than the scrunchies.
