Weekend Shut-In Worksheet: Read Drunk Mom, Watch “Continuum” & Take Up Needlepoint

Activities are wonderful, but sometimes, it’s fine to want to shut the world out for a couple of days, and make some serious time for you. Don’t be afraid of FOMO, either. There will always be another party, another pub crawl, another picnic. The time you’ll spend indulging in the things you want to do, alone, are well worth it. Here’s a handy list of awesome things to do this weekend!

  • Drunk Mom: A Memoir by Jowita Bydlowska: I’m reading this book, which is about a sober alcoholic who relapses immediately after her baby is born. New motherhood is stressful! The book follows the first several month’s of her son’s life and how she spent most of it, drunk and trying to hide empty bottles in her son’s stroller and dirty diapers. Bydlowska is not a likeable narrator at all and there’s a watching-a-car-crash-in-slow-motion aspect to the memoir. But I have loved ones who are alcoholics so I appreciate her “inside scoop,” so to speak, on how addicts think. She’s a talented writer and makes it relatable to everyone. – Jessica
  • “In The End, People May Really Just Want To Date Themselves,” FiveThirtyEightLifeOne of The Frisky’s commenters emailed me this article. Narcissists, all of us. – Jessica
  • Whatever You Are, Be A Good One by Lisa Congdon: I’m a sucker for hand-lettered inspiring quotes, so I want to check out Lisa Congdon’s new book, which is chock full of ‘em! – Winona
  • “Rituals”: This photo series highlighted on Bust magazine’s website looks so cool: it’s all about different people’s beauty routines. – Jessica

  • “A League of Their Own”: I probably get my Feminist Card revoked for admitting this, but “A League Of Their Own” is streaming on Netflix and it’s high time that I watch it for the first time. – Jessica
  • “Continuum”: I have to finish my Netflix “Continuum” marathon. Yes, I am a sucker for sci-fi. – Sophie

  • Shakira, Shakira: Okay, I know she’s a little cheesy, but Shakira’s latest self-titled album actually has some good tunes that don’t sound like the usual Shakira. Her songs “You Don’t Care About Me” and “Empire” are my favorites. — Jessica
  • Emerging Country-Folk:  I made a Pandora station based on all the artists Amelia and I shout out in this post, and that’s all I’m going to be listening to for the foreseeable future. So good. – Winona
  • “Darlin’ Be Home Soon,” Slade: I’m doing a song exchange thing over text with a friend of mine; he sends me a link to a song, I send him a link, and so on and so forth. It’s often stuff we’re just each listening to, but it’s also a bit of a conversation via song. Anyway, he sent me this one that I never heard before and it just took things up a notch, it’s so GOOD. It’s by a band called Slade that never really made it HUGE in the U.S. The song is originally by The Lovin’ Spoonful, but I like this version best. Totally tugs at the heartstrings. Anyway, the song exchange idea is a fun way of keeping in touch with friends in other places, when you’re both busy and don’t always have time to talk. – Amelia

  • White Asparagus: I made white asparagus on Thursday night, thinking it was the same as green asparagus. I had no idea you’re supposed to remove an outer peel first from white asparagus, which explains why it was so bitter. Here’s a recipe on Saveur that I should have read first. – Jessica
  • Mexican Breakfast Bake: I have been uber lazy and eating out all week. Tomorrow we hit the grocery store for the essentials. I can’t wait to make a Mexican Breakfast Bake. – Sophie
  • Pisco Porton: Last weekend, I tasted Pisco Porton, a white spirit from Peru, for the first time and curiosity got the best of me. I purchased a bottle and am dedicating an afternoon to cocktail concocting. – Sophie
  • Strawberry Desserts: Moonshine Fried Pies: These strawberry moonshine friend pies look amaaaaazing. As does this strawberry cake. Apparently I’m in a mega strawberry mood. – Winona
  • Mocha: I’m pretty much a mocha obsessive, so I’m going to need to go over each and every one over these recipes for 15 mocha-flavored treats thoroughly.

  • Watch Baseball: My boyfriend joined the Tennessee Vintage Baseball League (which is a bunch of guys who dress up in historic uniforms and play baseball according to 1860s rules and traditions — yes, seriously!), and the season starts this weekend. Very excited to cheer him on by his official nickname, which is “Biscuit.” – Winona
  • DIY Solid Perfume: I really, really want to try making my own solid perfume. I want to try to create a perfect mix of lavender and vanilla– Winona
  • Needlepoint: I’ve been thinking about taking up needlepoint for awhile, mostly because my ADD is soothed by always having something to do with my hands and hey, making cool gifts for people is more productive than playing Doge2048. I want to make cute little needlepoint canvases with messages and simple images, like this and this– Amelia
  • Bar Method: A friend convinced me to buy a five pack of Bar Method classes, an extremely cultish brand of exercise inspired by ballet movements. I took my first class last week and it KILLED ME. But I have four more (expensive!) classes that I am not going to allow to go to waste and maybe by the time I’m done with those I’ll be madly in love with it and have a smokin’ ballerina body. STAY TUNED. – Amelia
