Is A Movie Version Of “Wicked” Finally Headed Our Way?
Fellow Broadway fanatics, prick up your ears: a long-awaited film adaptation of the musical “Wicked” might finally be picking up speed. Stephen Schwartz, the musical’s composer, hinted to New York magazine the people who make such dreams come true are “starting to do some work on it.” Okay, so that’s pretty vague, but it’s better than the radio silence that’s been surrounding the project for the past few years. Schwartz still isn’t sure how many years away that film might be, but he’s currently in the process of considering how to make the story shine on camera. “What are we going to change? What are we going to keep? How do you use a whole new language and medium to tell the story?” he told New York. Well, I’m wondering the same thing! Will the quirk and charm of “Wicked” come across onscreen? Will Elphaba’s big flying scene look really epic with movie effects? If the success of Broadway-to-big-screen movies “Hairspray,” “Chicago” or “Dreamgirls” are any indication, “Wicked” is definitely worth holding out hope for! [NYMag.com]
