Beauty Test Drive: Laura Mercier Nail Lacquer
Like most women, I have 312 bottles of nail polish knocking around my apartment at any given moment. When a package of spring beauty products from Laura Mercier arrived at the office, I had mixed emotions when Sophie handed me a bright lavender nail polish called Reckless: Yay, pretty, expensive nail polish!!!!! and also Oh, I already have that color.
Yes, I have pretty much the exact same shade from Forever 21 called Grape Shake. I guess purple is a big color this season? But I’m sure you won’t be surprised one bit to learn that the $2.80 nail polish from Forever 21 and the $18 nail polish from Laura Mercier are miles apart in quality.
Product: Laura Mercier, $18, Nordstrom.com
Application: I’m not used to wearing fancier nail polish brands, but it turns out there’s a whole world of incredible nail polish that I’ve been missing out on. Coats of this Laura Mercier lacquer literally melted into itself without the slightest bit of clumping or streaking. I used to be very attentive about using a bottom coat and a top coat to make my at-home manicures last longer. But with this lacquer, I don’t even feel like I need to. My nails are super-shiny without it.
Overall: The color Reckless looks shimmery lavender in the bottle, but loses its shimmer when applied: it just looks like a bright, creamy purple. Two coats was easy-peasy to apply and fast-drying. And what’s most amazing to me about this Laura Mercier lacquer is that it barely smells at all and didn’t leave a lingering smell afterwards in my living room. I don’t know how she does it, but it’s amazing.
Really, these two polishes might be the same color but the products are as different as sour cream and ice cream. The Forever 21 shade is being gifted to my nieces. I’m a Laura Mercier convert.
