Weekend Shut-In Worksheet: Read Love Me By Rachel Shukert, Binge-Watch “House Of Cards” & Make Sweet Corn Cake

Activities are wonderful, but sometimes, it’s fine to want to shut the world out for a couple of days, and make some serious time for you. Don’t be afraid of FOMO, either. There will always be another party, another pub crawl, another picnic. The time you’ll spend indulging in the things you want to do, alone, are well worth it. Here’s a handy list of awesome things to do this weekend!

  • I really, really loved this Flavorwire piece by Tyler Coates about how pop music can help us process and heal from heartbreak– Amelia
  • I’m dying to read this piece on The Atlantic called “Why Writers Are The Worst Procrastinators”, but I haven’t gotten around to it yet… – Jessica
  • I started a feminist book club and the first book I chose for us to read is Sex At Dawn: The Prehistoric Origins Of Modern Sexuality. That’s what I plan to start reading this weekend! – Jessica
  • I started reading a quirky, little novel called Eleanor & Park that I’m digging so far. It’s one of those “YA but appeals to adults” books about first love. – Ami
  • I’m also reading a “YA but appeals to adults” book! I basically am obsessed with every word Rachel Shukert ever writes, and I loved the first book in her Starstruck YA series, which takes place during the glamourous heyday of Hollywood. The second book in the series, Love Me, came out this week and picks up where the first book left off. I can’t wait to see what happens to its heroines, Amanda, Margo and Gabby. Will Amanda win back handsome screenwriter Harry Gordon? Is Gabby still popping pills? Are Margo and Dane Forrest still going strong? So many questions… – Amelia
  • I’m currently reading Sharp Objects by Gillian Flynn (the author of Gone Girl) which I’m really enjoying, but I’m eager to finish so I can start my next book: Haemans by Nicoline Evans. The author happens to be a friend of mine, and this is her debut book! It’s a fantasy/futuristic thriller, and I encourage you all to check it out. – Katie
  • This post is a wealth of information about DIY fixes and workarounds for clothes you never thought you’d wear again. – Winona

  • Helllllllllo, “House of Cards” season two is officially on Netflix, so I’ll be doing nothing but binge-watching my favorite devilish political couple, Frank and Claire Underwood, causing all sorts of trouble. – Amelia
  • This weekend in new Netflix docs, I will be watching “The Price Of Gold,” which explores Tonya Harding’s side of the scandal at the 1994 U.S. Figure Skating Championships. – Ami

  • Eric Church’s new album, The Outsiders, is so good that I actually bought it on CD like a high schooler from the 90s (don’t worry, it came with a free MP3 download). The song “Roller Coaster Ride” has been on repeat in my car for 3 days straight. Oh! And country music/Eric Church fans should also read Spin.com’s detailed cover story on him. – Winona

  • Last weekend I made crab, mushroom and leek lasagna and it’s the definition of decadent. Next time I might add cherry tomatoes, too, for an added kick of flavor. – Jessica
  • Who doesn’t love a good slow cooker recipe? Since my mom’s slow cooker literally exploded this week (oops), I will be making these slow cooker pulled pork sandwiches from Food Network to fulfill all of our savory, slow-cooked desires. – Katie
  • Any cocktail that’s named after a Celine Dion ballad is my new favorite cocktail. – Winona
  • I basically cannot deal with the cold anymore, so I’m spending the rest of the winter indoors cooking and reading and binge-watching TV shows and looking at apartment rentals in Los Angeles. Also, making and eating my take on my dad’s chili recipe, which you can find right here. – Amelia
  • And you know what would be good with Amelia’s chili? This Mexican sweet corn cake– Winona
