Beyond “Male” And “Female”: Facebook Now Allows More Inclusive Options For Gender Identity

The gender options on Facebook have worked well enough for those of us who identify as “male” or “female.” But what about folks who wish to publicly identify as something else? Until now, their only option has been to leave that option blank or be mis-gendered. After working with LGBTQ activists, Facebook announced an “Other” option to customize your correct gender identity. A scroll down menu (like shown) listing a bunch of different gender identities: transgender male, intersex, cisgender female, queer, and so on. It even offers the option “gender questioning” for folks who aren’t sure which label, if any, fits them just yet. Currently, the new inclusive options are only available for users in the United States, but it’s a great start. It’s not often Facebook does something that we actually like, so this makes the new extra exciting. Good job, everyone! [The Verge] [Image of Facebook via Shutterstock]
