Gabourey Sidibe

“American Horror Story: Coven” star Gabourey Sidibe is the latest celebrity to use a verboten transphobic slur — although in Gabby’s case, she used it while speaking out about police profiling and harassment against transgender folks.

In January, Gabby appeared as a guest on “The Arsenio Hall Show” and was asked about New Orleans, where “Coven” filmed. She said New Orleans was great, then added, “There was a bar that we would frequent and every time we’d go, when we were leaving, every single time there was always like a gang of cops arresting trannies.” She then continued to use the word “tranny” several more times, making a joke about how police were arresting them, perhaps, because of “tranny on tranny crime” : “And I don’t know what goes on with trannies but that tranny on tranny crime needs to stop!”

It’s a weird pivot: first Gabby is actually pointing out something unjust and and terrible that happens to transgender folks. Then she makes a joke about their arrests, which makes you wonder if she intended to point out the injustice in the first place or was just trying to tell a story to Arsenio Hall about craaaazy stuff that happens in New Orleans.

Either way, LGBTQ rights groups are disappointed. In a statement to the Huffington Post, the executive director for the National Center for Transgender Equality, said:

“Using the word ‘tranny’ isn’t OK anymore. …  It’s not just that she used the word ‘tranny’ but that she’s making fun of violence in a city where the police have a history of committing violence and discrimination against trans women of color. It’s the kind of thing that trans people listen to and say, ‘This is someone who is not thinking about our lives. This is someone who is making fun of our problems.’”

Gabby is just the latest celebrity to use the word “tranny,” seemingly unaware it is considered offensive by transgender folks. Chloe Sevigny, Blake Lively, and Olivia Wilde have all made ignorant comments about “trannies.” I wonder how many more feet-in-mouths it will take before celebrities learn.
