Amy Poehler Compares Hollywood To A Bad Boyfriend, Feminism To A Car

“Power sometimes comes down to knowing the vocabulary, figuring out how the system works and how to work within it. You need to believe that you deserve to be in the room once you get there. Directing, producing, and writing is the direction I’m headed into these days…I like to do things that challenge me and make me nervous. You learn early as an actor that creating your own material is the only way to have any control. Hollywood is like a bad boyfriend. You can’t stand around and wait to be asked to dance. I used to say that I wanted to make great art with people I love. Now I have an addendum to that goal: to get things on the air.”

On people backing away from describing themselves as feminist:

“But then they go on to explain what they support and live by—it’s feminism exactly. I think some big actors and musicians feel like they have to speak to their audience and that word is confusing to their audience. But I don’t get it. That’s like someone being like, ‘I don’t really believe in cars, but I drive one every day and I love that it gets me places and makes life so much easier and faster and I don’t know what I would do without it.’”

Amy Poehler kills it as usual in the latest issue of Elle. I don’t think her metaphors could be anymore dead on. I’ll continue to hold out hope for Amy to adopt me and be my mother. [NYMag.com]
