19-Year-Old Tennis Champ Eugenie Bouchard Asked Stupid/Sexist Question About Her Celebrity Dream Date

On Monday, 19-year-old Eugenie Bouchard of Montreal became the first Canadian tennis player in history to reach a Grand Slam semifinal. That’s pretty cool, right? But what inquiring minds really want to know is what celebrity this teenager would like to date.

After beating her opponent in the Australian Open, Eugenie was approached on the court by a (female!) reporter, who asked:

“You’re getting a lot of fans here, a lot of them male. They want to know: if you could date anyone in the world of sport, of movies — I’m sorry they asked me to say this — who would you date?”

I might not mind this who-do-you-want-to-date question (which male sports stars aren’t immune to being asked) if it hadn’t been prefaced by the comment that “you’re getting a lot of fans here, a lot of them male.” The implication isn’t that she’s getting fans for her tennis playing — she’s getting male fans for being a cute, fit 19-year-old tennis player. It’s a shame that instead of focusing on her breaking a 30-year slump for Canada, this reporter — at the directive of someone above her, it sounds like — chose to focus on her sexual desirability. And while a lot of athletes are seen as sex objects, young female athletes definitely have it worse.

And by the way, her celebrity crush is Justin Bieber. Eugenie gamely answered the question, but was obviously embarrassed.
