Instagram Has Private Messaging Now

Meet Instagram Direct!

love Instagram. I may even be a little bit addicted, so I was sort of on the edge of my seat this morning when the app held a press event to announce some mystery news. Instagram’s co-founder, Kevin Systrom, revealed Instagram Direct, which allows you to send photos and videos to one person or a select group of people, like private messaging. I was expecting something a little more epic than that, but this is pretty cool! Of course, the announcement is provided via a twee music video of road-tripping carefree youth. Because that’s how Instagram rolls.

You’ll be able to see when someone has viewed your message and whether they’ve “liked” it. You can only receive photos and videos from people you actually follow, and if you get a photo from someone you don’t know, it goes into a pending requests list. To ward off all the creeper capabilities this provides, the photo itself doesn’t show up until you explicitly accept the private message invitation, and if you ignore someone’s request once, that person will continually be ignored until you tell Instagram otherwise.
