Style Icon Erykah Badu Is The New Face Of Givenchy

Erykah Badu has long been one of my favorite neo soul artists, not to mention one of the most fashionable people, um, anywhere (putting aside that her influence may have led to then-boyfriend Common embracing crochet pants, but I digress). So it’s awesome to learn that Badu has been named the face of Givenchy’s latest ad campaign, in part because having a Black woman be the muse for such a high fashion brand, in an industry where they are generally wholly underrepresented, is a breath of fresh air. In fact, all of the female models used in Givenchy’s latest campaign are women of color. Givenchy designer Ricardo Tisschi told of the homogeniety in fashion:

“It’s 2013. Everybody’s being so cool about Instagram, about Facebook, any media — everybody’s being so open. At the end of the day, why are not so many black girls or Latin girls in shows? When you have an American president who is black! When I see this happening, it’s quite sad, I think. People can be so avant-garde, so advanced, but actually not, because people are still making differences between skin color.”

As for his selection of Badu, apparently he had the singer in mind for awhile, saying, “Erykah, she’s an icon—come on! … “She’s one of the most stylish women I’ve met in my life. She’s got such a good sense of proportion, of colors.” Truth. Click on through for just a small handful of Badu’s amazing fashion statements over the years… []
