Armani Mislabels Black Actress Alfre Woodard As Black Actor Idris Elba On Instagram
Do you know this actress’s name? It’s not a big deal if you don’t. I didn’t, until I used Google, which is what you do when you don’t know a famous person’s name and you’re going to write about them on the Internet, right? I can tell you who she isn’t, though, and that’s actor Idris Elba. I am absolutely certain of this. Armani’s social media people, on the other hand? Not so much.
On Monday night, the 18-year-old unpaid intern (that’s just a guess) responsible for the brand’s Instagram published a photo of “12 Years a Slave” actress Alfre Woodard wearing an Armani dress at the Governors Awards. Said intern was unable to identify Alfre Woodard upon first glance. There is nothing wrong with that. There is, however, something a little bit wrong with the caption, which reads, “Idris Elba posing in a gorgeous Giorgio @armani dress at the 5th Annual Governors Awards.” What do Idris Elba and Alfre Woodard have in common, aside from a shared profession? Uh, race. And that’s about it. Black people! You just can’t tell ‘em apart.
This gaffe, understandably, had collective heads hitting desks everywhere. It also spawned the brilliant #ArmaniCaptions, coined by @FeministaJones, a tongue-in-cheek Twitter tag highlighting other similar “mistakes.” The results are, for real, laugh out loud funny …
