Today in Horrible Things I Would Rather Not Know: a 17-year-old girl was arrested for shoplifting at a Victoria’s Secret in midtown Manhattan yesterday and was carrying a dead fetus inside her bag.
Two 17-year-old girls were pulled over by security guards inside the Victoria’s Secret in Herald Square because they were seen stealing lingerie. Then they noticed a “strong odor.” They found a dead male fetus inside one of the shopping bags, which appeared to be six or seven months along. One girl is believed to be the mother. She told police she had a miscarriage the day before and had posted on Facebook on Wednesday, “These Cramps, SON.” Police are currently investigating the cause of death.
The girl, who is from NYC, was taken to Bellevue Hospital. She is already the mother of a two-year-old son; sources told NY1 she does not have custody of that child. Neighbors also told media outlets they had no idea that she was even pregnant.
Both young women were charged with petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property. Customers complained to the New York Daily News that the Victoria’s Secret was kept open during the entire incident (and I don’t blame them).
This story is as extremely sad as it is extremely odd. Who knows exactly what the girl was thinking all this time. Maybe it was a pregnancy that she did not want. Maybe she wasn’t aware she was pregnant at all. Maybe it was a miscarriage and she was understandably devastated. It isn’t hard to imagine that a 17-year-old girl would be so upset, confused and fearful during a pregnancy (especially one gone wrong) that she wasn’t thinking straight.
But why she decided to go shoplifting while all this was happening, we’ll never know. Here’s hoping this young mother gets the mental health help and medical support that she needs.
