Weekend Shut-In Worksheet: Read Meaty, Get Obsessed With Lorde & Make Pumpkin Ale Ice Cream Floats

Activities are wonderful, but sometimes, it’s fine to want to shut the world out for a couple of days, and make some serious time for you. Don’t be afraid of FOMO, either. There will always be another party, another pub crawl, another picnic. The time you’ll spend indulging in the things you want to do, alone, are well worth it. Here’s a handy list of awesome things to do this weekend!

READ

  • I just finished Samantha Irby’s Meaty in a couple of frenzied late nights, and let me tell you, shit is hilarious. She got her start writing on her blog, which showcases her pretty incredible take on dating, friendship, being a woman and Crohn’s Disease, of all things. Really, so, so good. — Megan
  • Dave Eggers’ new book The Circle is billed as a juicy skewering of new tech companies and their Big Brother-y attempts to get all up in our business, and take over every aspect of everything that you do. It’s out October 8, but if you want to get a sneak peek of what’s coming up, The New York Times excerpted it last week in the magazine. – Megan
  • I am finally reading The Interestings by Meg Wolitzer (which came out a while ago) and loving it so hard. – Ami

WATCH

  • I have two wildly different movies to recommend, both available on OnDemand. First, the hilaaaaarious stoner flick, “This Is The End,” starring James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jonah Hill, which made my stomach hurt I laughed so much. And then the indie flick “The East,” about a private investigator who infiltrates an eco-terrorism group, is seriously compelling. Also it stars Alexander Skarsgard, so it’s plenty pretty to look at too. – Amelia

LISTEN

  • Have you listen to Lorde’s Pure Heroine yet? Oh my god, why not? At 16 years old, the pipes on this girl are to die for. I predict many, many Grammys for this girl next year. – Amelia

FOLLOW

  • This is sort of strange, but I highly recommend following, of all people, Jada Pinkett Smith on Facebook. She posts amazing status updates on the regular, like this one from earlier this week, which starts off “This morning I woke up to the screeching howl of my husky outside. His howls mirrored my broken, empty heart that plagued me this morning. I woke up missing so many people, so many things from my past.” So good. — Amelia

MAKE

  • This French Onion soup recipe looks so good my mouth is watering just staring at the photo (which I’ve been doing for like 10 minutes because it’s beautiful). Recipe is in the photo description at the link. – Winona
  • I recently went to an art opening that was serving pumpkin beer floats and now I’m eager to recreate this delicious dessert drink at home. Mmmmmmm…. – Winona
  • If you’re anything like me, you probably have one (or 10) too many cheap sequin dresses that you purchased just because they were on sale or you wanted some options for New Year’s or you accidentally went to H&M after happy hour. Whatever, the point is, I’ve got a closet full of cheap sequin dresses just begging to be up-cycled into a cool throw pillow. Here’s how I’m gonna do it. – Winona
