Weekend Shut-In Worksheet: Revisit Season 1 Of “Breaking Bad,” Get Down To King Krule & Craft A Pair Of Friendship Earrings

Activities are wonderful, but sometimes, it’s fine to want to shut the world out for a couple of days, and make some serious time for you. Don’t be afraid of FOMO, either. There will always be another party, another pub crawl, another picnic. The time you’ll spend indulging in the things you want to do, alone, are well worth it. Here’s a handy list of awesome things to do this weekend!

  • I loved this piece in the newest issue of Bitch magazine about anti-abuse activism within the BDSM community.  It’s not often that feminist media devotes much attention to kink in a way that isn’t condemnatory, so I was pleased to see this very well-done piece. – Jessica
  • My stepsister, Erika Liodice, wrote a book called Empty Arms.  It’s about a woman who had a baby when she was a teenager and was forced into adoption. Years later, she learns she can’t conceive and is on a quest to find her long-lost daughter. (Available on Amazon in paperback and e-book). – Katie
  • Jonathan Lethem’s newest book Dissident Gardens is a sprawling epic about a family of radicals in Queens, and, judging by the excerpt in the New Yorker over the summer, it’s gonna be a good one. – Megan
  • Check out Overdressed author Elizabeth Cline’s article in The Nation about the Model Alliance and advocating for fair, ethical treatment of models. – Winona

  • I watched the entire first season of “Graceland” on demand this week. It’s a USA show my sisters raved about, so I checked it out and it’s 100% addictive. Hot FBI agents. Secrets. Action. Amazing. — Katie
  • If you’re a “Breaking Bad” fan, do yourself a favor and watch the first few episodes from season one again — they are incredibly prophetic in light of last week’s climactic “Ozymandias” episode. – Amelia

  • Friendship bracelets are so summer 2013. It’s all about friendship earrings this fall. Make a cool pair for yourself with this easy tutorial. – Amelia
  • This rainbow petal cake is one of the most gorgeous baked goods I’ve ever seen, and the how-to looks weirdly fun/meditative. – Winona
  • Painting bobby pins with bright nail polish = easiest DIY ever. – Winona

  • I’m loving KT Tunstall’s new album, Invisible Empire // Crescent Moon. It’s her usual liquid vocals and mellow sounds, perfect background for a lazy afternoon. – Jessica
  • If you need new fall music, or are just sick of all the crap you’ve been listening to, here are some gentle suggestions: King Krule’s debut 6 Feet Below the Moon; Janelle Monae’s The Electric Ladyand the catchy pop stylings of Ariana Grande, who references ’90s R&B classics and sounds like a baby Mariah Carey. – Megan
