Let’s take a minute to talk about Miley Cyrus, shall we?
With a performance so uncomfortable it rivals that of the bride who grinded down the aisle to Buckcherry’s “Crazy Bitch,” Miley’s jaw-dropping VMAs stunt left parents covering the eyes of their children and grown adults glaring with disapproval as they watched in awe.
It’s safe to say the twerkin’ pop star’s performance ruffled more than a few feathers, but there’s something to be said about the fact that we’re still talking about it days later. Wasn’t that the point?
Miley pranced around in flesh-colored undergarments, gyrated against the crotch of a married man (and, let’s be clear, he gets even more side-eye from us on that one), simulated masturbation with a foam finger and shoved her face into a dancer’s backside, all just part of her ploy to get fans talking. And it worked! Rolling Stone thought she did what she was supposed to for the VMAs — she put on a show! But on the other hand, there have been some very valid criticisms of the racial implications of her performance, particularly her use of black women as props. Who knew Miley would give us so much to think about?
Personally, I’d compare the shock factor of her performance to Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s Super Bowl “Nipplegate” (with maybe a few extra surprises). Years later, we remember it well. It was epic. That will likely be the case with Miley.
So, was she “just being Miley” and having fun with her performance or was it totally offensive?
