Watch “All-American Boy,” The First Music Video From Openly Gay Country Singer Steve Grand

Country music — as much as I love it — has never been a particularly liberal or diverse musical genre, which is why I’m so excited about Steve Grand and his song “All-American Boy.” Grand is openly gay, a fact which, when he revealed it to his parents, resulted in 5 years of “straight therapy” to “fix” his sexual orientation. “I felt like I really was a shame to my parents,” Grand told ABC News. “I felt like there was no way I could ever make them proud.” Grand wrote “All-American Boy” to describe the confusing, painful feelings of unrequited love, and maxed out his credit cards to produce the $7,000 music video. As it nears 1 million views on YouTube, it looks like Grand’s financial risk is paying off. “[The song] is not about being gay,” he says, “it’s about that longing for someone.” And hey, that’s about as classic country as it gets.
