A couple weeks ago, we brought you the crazy story of Kiera Wilmot, a 16-year-old student in Florida whose ill-fated science experiment got her arrested and charged with a felony. Wilmot was set to be tried as an adult in Florida’s notoriously tough court system, but thanks to a public backlash and internet campaign, she was able to get a lawyer who represented her for almost no charge and the state of Florida finally dropped the charges against her on Wednesday. But the good news doesn’t stop there…

Former NASA Homer Hickam (who was played by Jake Gyllenhaal in “October Sky”) generously offered to pay for Wilmot’s spot in the Advanced Space Academy program in Hunstville, Alabama, and started a Crowdtilt fund to send her twin sister along with her and cover the young women’s travel costs. The fund met its goal in just two days, and any extra money raised will go to the Wilmot family. It’s not yet known if Kiera will be able to return to her high school (her chemistry project also got her expelled), but hey, space camp is a nice consolation in the meantime. [Boing Boing]
