Last night, a five-year-old girl died in a hospital in India from cardiac arrest, succumbing to wounds suffered when she was raped.
According to a hospital official, the child had been in a coma for over a week and suffered brain damage as a result of being smothered during the attack to stifle her cries. Two men have been arrested in conjunction with the assault. One allegedly lured her to a neighboring farm, and the other, a friend of her parents, raped her.
The rape of this five-year-old girl happened on April 18, the exact same day that another five-year-old was found in New Delhi after being raped and held for three days. Her discovery, and the knowledge that police offered the family money to drop the case, sparked massive protests in the country.
Following brutal rapes of two kindergarten-aged girls in the same week, I can only hope India’s laws change the rape culture and eradicate the scourge of sexual violence against women and girls.
