Remember the old “Saturday Night Live” sketch about Antonio Banderas? He’d start to take off his shirt and his back up band would warn “too sexy, too sexy.” Well the real-life version of that sort of happened to Omar Borkan Al Gala. Omar is an actor, poet and musician from Dubai. Last week, he was attending the Jenadrivah Heritage & Culture Festival in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, where officials there deemed his male beauty THFSA (too hot for Saudi Arabia). Omar, along with three of his fellow festival attendees, were all deported back to the United Arab Emirates, on the claim that their attractiveness would provoke female attendees into fits of sexual fervor.
According to Arab-language paper Elaph, “A festival official said the three Emiratis were taken out on the grounds they are too handsome and that the Commission [for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vices] members feared female visitors could fall for them.”
Then again, Omar’s removal from the festival could just be retaliation on the part of the Saudis, angry that the U.A.E. permitted a female artist to perform at the event. But really Saudi Arabia, who are you really punishing? I’m sure the women of the U.A.E. are more than happy to see Omar returned safe and sound. [Telegraph]
