Michigan Republican National Committee member Dave Agema didn’t get the memo. Support for LGBT equality is at an all time high, poll numbers show that gay marriage is widely accepted — especially by younger generations. OH WAIT and beyond polls and numbers the LGBT community deserves to be treated like every other American with full rights, free from stigma because that’s just a decent human thing to do. Even Agema’s own party is beginning to see the light — or at least 21 of them who asked the RMC member to resign after posting anti-gay comments on Facebook.
The Facebook post was an excerpt from an anti-gay article written by Frank Joseph, M.D, a bigot who seems to believe being gay is a terminal illness. The basic gist? Schools are indoctrinating children to think that homosexuality was an acceptable lifestyle, and parents should make a stink and pull their children out of these schools if necessary.
Then. when confronted about posting Joseph’s nonsense comments, Agema did what any irrational person would do. No, not warn everyone from going to the dentist, which also apparently spreads HIV. He wrote an email to critics defending the Facebook post:
[Joseph's] findings and others confirm its an unhealthy lifestyle. The gay activists portray themselves as innocent victims ; however, we who believe in traditional, time tested values are being bullied. Because I disagree with their views, I have had threats to me and my family — thats hate! This is not about hate but a lifestyle that is against 230 years of American history and filled with medical, psychological, legal and costs reasons to oppose it. If you truly loved someone, you would want them to know their lifestyle usually leads to early death. It’s about common sense. It’s about maintaining the family and its importance to the well being of the children and this nation.
I’m not surprised by his bigoted views: Agema was also the co-sponsor of a 2011 bill to prohibit providing domestic partners equal benefits that same-sex public employees receive. This bill was signed into law by Michigan Governor Rick Snyder.
Dave Agema get with the times! Take your anti-gay sentiments off Facebook and out of a position of political power!
