Hillary Clinton Comes Out In Support Of Marriage Equality

As if you needed another reason to love former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton!

Clinton just released a PSA for the Human Rights Campaign in which she comes out in full support of marriage equality for lesbians and gays:

“LGBT Americans are our colleagues, our teachers, our soldiers, our friends, our loved ones. And they are full and equal citizens and deserve the rights of citizenship. That includes marriage. That’s why I support marriage for lesbian and gay couples. I support it personally and as a matter of policy and law, embedded in a broader effort to advance equality and opportunity for LGBT Americans and all Americans.”

My favorite part is when Clinton addresses her role as Secretary of State and how the United States was seen, at least in some countries around the world, as a beacon for gay rights.

But Clinton also spoke on a more personal note about her daughter Chelsea, which she does not often do. She spoke about her beliefs about marriage as a beautiful union which shouldn’t be denied to anyone, including other people’s sons and daughters.  “A few years ago, Bill and I celebrated as our own daughter married the love of her life and I wish every parent that same joy,” she said. Any parent, I should think, can empathize.

This is an excellent PSA: thoughtful, warm, spot-on.  While I wish she had made this video as Secretary of State, while running for president, or as First Lady, I suppose it’s better late than never.
