Connecticut Lawmaker Stripped Of Title Over Lewd “Snake” Comment To Teen Girl
Rep. Ernest Hewett of Connecticut, a Democrat, was caught on audiotape making a lewd sexual comment regarding a 17-year-old girl who testified to the state legislature about her internship. The unnamed girl. who interned at the Connecticut Science Center, said the experience helped her overcome her fear of snakes:
“I am usually a very shy person, and now I am more outgoing. I was able to teach those children about certain things like snakes that we have and the turtles that we have… I want to do something toward that, working with children when I get older.”
Rep. Hewitt was heard on audiotape replying:
“If you’re bashful I got a snake sitting under my desk here.”
Hewett made the comment on February 21 and this week was stripped of his role deputy speaker of the House, which you can listen to audio of here, should you want to be grossed out. The demotion comes with a $6,500 pay loss.
Hewett’s apology, as reported by the Connecticut Post, was really more like a doofy non-apology that doesn’t admit to actually doing anything wrong:
” … I want to apologize to my colleagues for the statement I made. I take full responsibility for my actions. In hindsight, I can really see how this can be misconstrued as something sexual.”
Misconstrued! Wahhhhhh, he’s the victim here! You guys, he really did have a cobra under his desk.
