Face Tats!

Back in 2009, tattoo artist Rouslan Toumaniantz gained infamy for allegedly inking 56 stars onto 18-year-old Kimberley Vlaminck’s face while she slept. Soon after, Vlaminck admitted that she lied. The Belgian teen was indeed awake while receiving her face tattoos, but she made up the story because her dad was pissed. Hence, why face tattoos on young people are complicated. Sadly, even after Vlaminck told the truth, Rouslan Toumaniantz’s career was ruined and he moved back to Russia.

But this was not to be the last we’d hear of him.

In Russia, Vlaminck met 18-year-old Lesya online and fell “head over heels in love.” Just 24 hours after meeting her in person for the first time, he tattooed his name on her face. I suppose once you’ve tattooed your name on somebody’s face, you’re kind of committed to each other. The two have since gotten engaged, according to Facebook. Other sources say that they plan to marry. Lesya posted photos of her face tats on her Facebook page, saying that she wants “100% of the body covered in tattoo :) … It’s a symbol of our eternal devotion. I’d like him to tattoo every inch of my body.”

Of course, some people find this troubling. Understandably so. The decision to get a face tattoo, let alone of a person’s name, at the age of 18, is a rash one. I got a non-face, non-name tattoo at the age of 18 that I now hate. And if I had gotten the name of my boyfriend at the time on my face? I would be sinking a whole lot of money into laser tattoo removal. Between the ages of 18 and 30, let’s just say, you change a lot.

A friend of the couple came to their defense saying, “I know that there are people who are terrified that Lesya has made a rash decision that she’ll regret horribly, but sometimes the best decisions are the ones you make in an instant with your heart rather than the ones long-debated in your mind.”

I’m not sure I agree with that statement, but it’s a nice sentiment.
