Arkansas Politician Introduces “Fetal Heartbeat” Bill To Restrict Abortion

By: Jessica Wakeman / January 30, 2013

Abortions could be banned as early as six weeks into pregnancy, before many women even know they are pregnant, under a new bill proposed in Arkansas.

Republican State Senator Jason Rapert introduced a “fetal heartbeat” bill, which criminalizes abortion after a fetal heartbeat can be detected.  Rapert’s bill states that abortion would only be legal after that point in time in cases of rape, incest, or threat to the woman’s life. Furthermore the bill penalizes doctors who provide those abortions with a $10,000 fine and up to six years in prison.

Sound extreme? It does to me, too, but a State Senate committee advanced the bill this morning.
