Just weeks after the death of a 23-year-old woman named Jyoti Singh Pandey, who was brutally gang raped on a bus — assaulted with a metal rod which required the removal of her intestines — another woman has been gang raped in India. Police say a 29-year-old woman was gang raped on Friday night by seven men, including a bus driver who drove past her stop, took her to a deserted area, and attacked her.
CNN reports that the victim was the only woman on the bus when the driver and his conductor ignored her request to drop her off at her stop and then abducted her. She initially refused to get off the bus, because she was scared. Then she was reportedly offered a ride on the bus driver’s motorcycle home; instead she was taken to a remote farmhouse where five additional men were waiting. She was threatened with a sharp weapon; they spent all night raping her. The next morning, she was dropped off in her in-laws’ village.
Police have already arrested six suspects, according to Reuters.
But if you can believe it, there’s even worse news: another incident occurred this weekend in India where a woman got off a train in a remote area, was sexually assaulted by a group of men in an orchard and then killed.
When will it end, India? How many more women must be raped and killed before sexual violence is taken seriously by the government and police? You can do better than suggesting women “arm” themselves with chili powder.
