Ugh!

Pay attention to this clip of Joe Scarborough and Mika Brzezinski on Thursday’s “Morning Joe.” Perhaps you’ll notice that every time a woman talks during the show, Scarborough talks over and through them. When a man speaks, Scarborough let’s them ramble. When BBC correspondent Katty Kay attempts to join the fray — ironically over Obama’s record with female appointments — Scarborough talks through her. And then … he has the nerve to bring up the Lilly Ledbetter Act out of one side of his mouth, while the other side is behaving in a condescending and demeaning way to the women in the discussion. And then … when Brzezinski calls him out on his chauvinistic behavior, Scarborough implodes. Watch the whole 10 minute clip (I know, I know) and you’ll see the arc of Scarborough’s behavior.

“I am afraid to use the word because it will not be good for you. You’re being chauvinistic right now, and you need to stop,” she said. Which prompted an attack from Scarborough, who said that she had no right to call him that, considering his record in Congress (Scarborough is a former representative from Florida). He then berated Brzezinski for her pro-Obama stance (which sort of seems beside the point.)

Here’s the rub: Chauvinism isn’t just what you say, it’s how you say it. Scarborough’s crimes aren’t in his opinions, they’re in his belittling and arrogant behavior, and Brzezinski had every right to call him out on it.

His tantrum later elicited an apology from Brzesinski:

Even after she apologizes, Scarborough continues the same behavior.

Scarborough seemingly doesn’t get, or doesn’t want to get, that it’s all in the semantics of his actions. Maybe it’s subconscious, but he can’t seem to let a woman talk without interrupting her. It’s as if he doesn’t even register the sound of a female voice. So perhaps Joe Scarborough needs a few lessons — not in politics, but in treating women with respect. [Mediaite]
