This video comes with a trigger warning. As some of you may have heard, there’s been a lot of controversy over the alleged rape of an unnamed 16-year-old high school girl in the football-crazed town of Steubenville, Ohio. At issue is a prevailing culture of protection around the football players who are said to have perpetrated the crime. Steubenville High School teammates Ma’lik Richmond and Trent Mays were two of the town’s star players, and now they’re off the team, thanks to the rape allegations and upcoming case. But while Richmond and Mays are believed to be the main perpetrators of the physical crime, it’s believed that other teammates of theirs were also complicit in passing around video and photographic evidence of the incident.

Now the hacking group Anonymous has released a video of some of Mays’ and Richmond’s football teammates cracking jokes about the incident. According to the YouTube poster misternunya, “This video was obtained by Anonymous as part of #oprollredroll and #occupysteubenville. Only 2 arrests in this ongoing case while those that witnessed the incident and even on camera admit it’s rape, have not been charged due to lack of evidence.”

At the fore of the video is a kid named Michael Nodianos cracking jokes about the state of the unnamed girl. He repeatedly refers to her as “dead” and says that she’s as “dead” as “Andy Reid’s son” and explains that you “don’t need any foreplay on a dead girl. If it ain’t wet now it ain’t never gonna be wet.”

Nodianos is the primary speaker in the video, but all around him you can hear his football teammates responding to his jokes with laughter. The group, who allegedly colloquially refer to themselves as “the rape crew,” talk about the assault, claiming that the victim was not only sodomized, but also peed on. At one point, a guy off camera says, “That’s not cool. That’s like, rape. That is rape. They raped her.” Later on, he says, “Trent and Ma’lik raped someone.”

One kid off camera attempts to break up the “comedy” by saying, “This is not, like, funny. What if that was your daughter,” to which Nodianos responds, “But it isn’t.” A bunch of daughter-rape jokes ensue. Another off-camera voice says, “Y’all don’t understand how it is. I got a fuckin’ little sister… What if it was Amanda?” whom we can only assume is either Nodianos’ sister or girlfriend, because he replies, “It wouldn’t be though.”

While watching the video is an incredibly nauseating exercise, it does remind us that in many boys’ (these guys are not men, after all) minds, there are two kinds of women: girls that are rapeable and those that aren’t. Rapeable women are women who through socio-economic status, or “questionable” behavior, or flimsy morality, have been deemed appropriate victims. Good girls — these guys’ sisters and girlfriends, are rape-proof. Other women — like the 16-year-old who was assaulted by the Steubenville football team? Not so lucky.

So while it’s somewhat heartening to hear some of the teammates attempt to quell Nodianos’ rant, their protests still come with a very particular caveat: “What if she was your sister/mother/girlfriend?” What we want to know is, isn’t it enough that she’s a human being who is being put through very public physical and emotional pain by one of your teammates? Is it necessary to have a personal relationship or familial tie with a woman in order to show her some basic human decency? We surely hope not. [via Jezebel]
