A priest in a northern village in Italy posted some helpful tips for ladies on how to avoid getting beaten by their husbands. “Healthy self-criticism” is necessary for women to make sure there’s nothing they could be doing differently to stop getting beat, such as cooking more dinners, doing the laundry, and dressing more modestly.
Reuters quotes the advice posted by parish priest Piero Corsi at his church in San Terenzo di Lerici. The advice came from a website written by a conservative Catholic named Bruno Volpe:
Let’s ask ourselves. Is it possible that men have all gone mad at one stroke? We don’t think so,” said the text, which was reproduced in several newspapers. The core of the problem is in the fact that women are more and more provocative, they yield to arrogance, they believe they can do everything themselves and they end up exacerbating tensions. How often do we see girls and even mature women walking on the streets in provocative and tight clothing? Babies left to themselves, dirty houses, cold meals and fast food at home, soiled clothes. So if a family ends up in a mess and turns into crime (a form of violence which should be condemned and punished firmly) often the responsibility is shared.
This is absurd victim blaming. It presumes all men are violent beasts and a woman’s job is to behave well-enough so he doesn’t haul off and strike her. It also completely ignores male victims of domestic violence, as well as same-sex victims.
The offensive — not to mention, inaccurate — advice has since been taken down at the church. But this priest deserves to be fired from his parish.
If there’s someone who shouldn’t be doling out relationship tips, it’s a man who has never actually lived with a woman … let alone put his penis inside one.
