It’s official. The phenomenon which is “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” has infiltrated every last crevice of our psyche. Including our sex lives. Boo Boo and other “redneck” reality shows like “Duck Dynasty,” “Bayou Billionaires” and “Swamp People” are causing an obsession with “hillbilly porn.” Adult website Gamelink.com confirms that there has been a 250 percent increase in titles like “Hillbilly Honeys,” “Real White Trash,” and “Ozark Sex Fiend” since 2010.

OMG. I forgot all about “Hee Haw.” I used to love that show! But back to the matter at hand: why hillbilly porn? And why now? According to Michelle Dean’s Slate article about the rise of hillbilly culture, our obsession with “Here Comes Honey Boo Boo” has to do with our depressed economy:

“As Anthony Harkins observes in Hillbilly: A Cultural History of an American Icon, one of the hillbilly’s signature moves is to peak, popularity-wise, just when Americans sense that things in general are headed south. Its first true zenith came in the depressed 1930s, a handmaiden to the birth of commercial country music. Another arrived in the turbulent 1960s, when “The Beverly Hillbillies” and “Green Acres” and “Hee Haw” were in their prime.”

And there you have it. Blame the economy for our current taste in porn. There are so many awful titles running through my mind right now: “Biscuit Barn Bangers,” “Too Tay Poodles,” “Forklift Foot Fetish,” “Sketti Party,” “Roadkill Ranch.” I have to stop now. But really, the possibilities are endless for this genre. And a little bit terrifying.
