Beauty Test Drive: Urban Decay Supercurl Curling Mascara
My lashes are stick straight and blonde, and I wish I was fine with that, but instead I have dedicated a significant portion of my time on earth to making them appear long, dark, and luxuriously curly. This pursuit has taken me to the brightly lit beauty counters of luxury cosmetic brands and the dark recesses of drugstore clearance racks. It has caused me to hyperventilate in front of the Sephora employee who told me that the Shu Uemura eyelash curler would no longer be carried in US stores (don’t worry, it’s online), and it has caused me to burn my cheek with the metal edge of said eyelash curler after heating it up with a hairdryer in college. Along the way I’ve learned a lot and found quite a few awesome products, but I’m always on the lookout for more. You can imagine my excitement, then, when I discovered Urban Decay’s Supercurl Curling Mascara. Did it live up to its name? Read on to find out…
Price/Availability: $20, Sephora
Packaging: A mirrored dark gray tube decorated with swirling black designs. Seriously, whoever designed this tube should win the Most Beautiful Mascara Tube Award, if such a thing exists (if it doesn’t, I will print out a certificate and send it to them myself). And not only is the packaging lovely, it’s effective: the curved brush is one of the best mascara applicators I’ve used in a long time, and deposits color onto every lash easily and evenly, with just one swipe.
Formula: The name implies that this mascara will curl your lashes into a dramatically curved shape that lasts all day, and, well, I’ll get to that later. First, let me say that the lash conditioning ingredients (like shea butter and jojoba seed oil) really do work: my lashes felt and looked healthier and more lustrous after the first week of using this mascara. The deep black color is also great, and saturates each lash from root to tip. So, did Urban Decay’s mascara make my lashes look fuller, darker, shinier, and healthier? Absolutely. Did it curl them? Uummmm….maybe a little. I didn’t see any extra curl happening after I applied this mascara, but I did notice that after using my eyelash curler, the curvy shape held in place slightly longer than it does with other mascaras. However, I feel like I should qualify that statement by saying that someone who has not spent hours examining the precise angle of their eyelash curl probably wouldn’t notice much of a difference. Sigh. It seems my hunt for a magical curling mascara potion continues…
Wear Time: Lasts all day.
Overall: If you’re looking for a great mascara that volumizes, conditions, lasts forever, and is easy to apply, I would definitely recommend Urban Decay’s Supercurl Curling Mascara. If a super effective curling formula is what you’re after, you might want to look elsewhere.
OK, now I have to ask: have you guys had any luck with curling mascaras? Have you found any that actually work?
