Study Determines The Top Ten Most Annoying Sounds, Like You Don’t Already Know What They Are

Knowing is half the battle, right? And I know I have misophonia — which is when you are insanely irritated by particular sounds — like chewing, or crinkling bags, or typing or mouth-breathing or whatever. I have it, and bad. And that’s why I seriously visibly cringed when I heard that scientists had determined the 10 most annoying sounds in the world. Want to know what they are? Get ready to want to die…

  1. Electric drill
  2. Baby crying
  3. Brakes on a cycle squealing
  4. Angle grinder (that’s a power tool, we guess)
  5. Female scream
  6. Nails on a blackboard
  7. Ruler on a bottle
  8. Squeaky chalk on a blackboard
  9. Fork on a glass
  10. Knife on a bottle

(The last five have sound samples linked, so click at your own risk). I would also add: slurping, ticking clocks, eating carrots and singing mindlessly under your breath. The most pleasant noises, says science? Running water, thunder, babies laughing (I guess if you like babies) and applause (sorry, applause annoys me, too).

So yeah, basically I need to go live in a sound-proof box now. [Journal of Neuroscience]
