RIP Society: Teen Girl Gets Book Deal For One Direction Fan Fiction

Unfinished novel on your hard drive? Still paying off those loans for your MFA? It’s probably best to skip this post.

A 16-year-old girl named Emily Baker’s has gotten an e-book deal from Penguin for Loving The Band, which she originally penned online. For those readers who are not 14-year-old girls, One Direction is a boy band from the UK with that really annoying awesome song “What Makes You Beautiful.” (I just remembered boy bands have really rabid fans.)  Loving The Band stars a teenaged girl who gets caught in a love trial between two members of a boy band loosely based on One Direction and will be e-published on November 1.

Penguin editor Lindsay Heaven came across Emily Baker’s boy band bildungsroman on the website Movellas, an online writing community with robust “Twilight” and One Direction fan fic groups. Penguin had been looking to commission a writer to pen a romantic YA fictional novel that tapped into the current obsession with boy bands,” said an official statement. Emily proved to be just the right kind of new talent to write such a novel with powerful emotion and authority and world rights were duly acquired from

Of course, 50 Shades Of Grey also started as online fan ficTwilight, to be exact — so I suppose we can expect “getting discovered” by publishers this way will only become more and more common.

So, who is going to publish Amelia’s “Star Trek” fanfic, huh?
