I want to take a moment to bow down to Candace Nelson, creator of Sprinkles cupcakes, judge on the Food Network’s “Cupcake Wars,” and now, the inventor of the Cupcake ATM. Candace, you are a goddess. The ingenious idea allegedly came to her when she was pregnant and having “crazy cravings” in the middle of the night and had to get up and make herself a cupcake.
I am not and have never been pregnant, but I am a sugar worshipper. OK, sugar addict with a cookie dough/chocolate/frozen yogurt/frosting fetish.”Crazy cravings” are something I’ve been experiencing my entire life. Yes, I was that 10-year-old who snuck into the fridge in the middle of the night and ate all the frosting off my brother’s leftover birthday cake. I’m not proud of this, but it’s the truth. Luckily, I’ve learned not to indulge in this level of sugar binging as an adult, but the crazy sugar cravings still happen to me and the worst is when I’m having one and nothing is open.
That problem is about to be eradicated by Candace’s Cupcake ATM, which is open 24-hours a day. Using the touch screen, you pick the cupcake you want from a dozen or so flavors (including doggie cupcakes!), you swipe your credit card and wait as you watch live video of the robotic arm inside the Cupcake ATM retrieve your cupcake and deliver it to you in a little brown box. Wheee! Sugar crisis averted at any hour of the day or night.
Sadly, the Cupcake ATM doesn’t exist NYC yet, just Los Angeles, Chicago and now, London, but Candace promises they’ll be rolling them out all over the country. I’m excited, and quite frankly a little bit scared, for when this happens as I’ve been known to walk a good 20 blocks out of my way to make a run to 16 Handles (it’s a self-serve frozen yogurt shop with a topping bar for those of you who don’t live in NYC).
What lengths will I go to venture out to my local Cupcake ATM? I’m not sure I want to find out. Until my day of reckoning, I’ll have to live vicariously through Susannah Breslin, who visited the Cupcake ATM in Chicago and reported back. It appears that it’s just as yummy as it sounds. She highly recommends the Gluten-Free Red Velvet and the Vanilla with white sprinkles. Um, FEED ME FROSTING. [Forbes]
