“… 80 percent of female actors are pretty strong, powerful women, and that’s a very hard relationship for men to have. Even today, in 2012, the guy is supposed to be in charge. I see it in every heterosexual relationship I know, the acquiescence of the female. When I observe people being coupled, I see too many compromises that I don’t know that I could make or would want to make.”

There’s lots of interesting stuff in Melissa Leo‘s Q&A in The New York Times Magazine, but what was most interesting to me was the stuff she said about relationships. Melissa jokes — at least, I think she was joking — about how she always picks a gaffer on-set to be her imaginary boyfriend because that’s so much easier than being in a real relationship. I don’t 100 percent agree with her theory here because I know there are guys who love strong, powerful women and who are willing to make compromises — but maybe she was just speaking to the male-dominated microcosm of Hollywood.
