Smoking while pregnant isn’t defensible.
But you know what else isn’t defensible? Pointing a gun at a pregnant woman.
A 24-year-old man in Bellingham, Washington, was arrested on Wednesday for allegedly aiming a handgun at a pregnant lady. The man is accused of driving his pickup truck alongside a pregnant woman who was smoking a cigarette and yelling at her, “Who the heck smokes when they’re pregnant?” She answered “I do” and words went back and forth; then he pointed a handgun at her, but thankfully drove off without firing. Upon being arrested, cops found two semiautomatic .45-caliber handguns in his car.
There’s no way this is defensible, dude. What, you’re going to threaten to kill her because you don’t want her to hurt/kill her baby? Not only is logically stupid but it’s just not your goddamn business to threaten someone else with physical harm to “save” their child.
Of course no woman should be smoking while pregnant — and no one else should be smoking around her, either. I can understand this man’s impetus to yell at her from his car (as trashy as I think yelling at people from inside cars may be). But physically threatening a pregnant woman is a scary embodiment of the idea that women’s bodies are not their own and some random stranger on the street is justified in threatening her with a gun to “put her in her place.” He might just be a hot-tempered wackadoo (who seem to be the ones who always brandish their guns in public, right?) but it seriously makes me sick he thought this was okay.
